X&Y

Music: Coldplay - Swallowed in the Sea
Book: Matt Ridley - The Agile Gene

You have got to get X&Y. It strikes me that every Coldplay album takes on a different characteristics—Parachutes gave us reposed, lounge-like (some might find it bluesy) tunes, Yellow notwithstanding; A Rush of Blood to the Head took on a markedly more accessible pop character whilst X&Y, taking on both outfits, gives us the best of both worlds. This is perhaps most apparent in the songs A Message and What If: catchy tunes assimilated within a somewhat abstracted setting (because unlike normal pop there is no immediately discernible structure, no immediately heartwarming chorus. If anything the choruses found might be faintly heart-wrenching, though not in the way heavy metal does it); the result is, for me, surrealistic pleasure.

And that’s no exaggeration. The songs in X&Y are the type that would bring me to imaginary space. And I would bring them to space if ever the opportunity presents itself; I do hope I get a music player in my afterlife. Coldplay probably agrees—songs like White Shadows and X&Y make explicit references to the “outer space” whilst soulful lyrics like “ swimmin' on a sea of faces | tired of the human races”
and “what if there is no time | and no reason, or rhyme” makes this album a must-have for despondent beings, a scripture for people who want to get out of this world.

Musical climaxes are probably confer one of the most enjoyable feelings one could have, and Coldplay gives it to you very well. Instruments are used to this end—they are gradually added to increase the tempo/volune within songs. Swallowed in the Sea is a prime example: first the vocals, then a drum beat and the keyboard, then the guitars, and they move together up in good fashion to the highest plateau before finishing off with a solitary voice going you belong with me, not swallowed in the sea. Note too the instrumental music in Fix You, at 2:35 and revel in its drum beat at 3:00.

The top5 songs I like:

1. Swallowed in the Sea
2. X&Y
3. Fix You
4. What If
5. White Shadows

Speed of Sound might be tasteful initially but it comes and go easily. It doesnt give the kind of musical ecstacy the rest gives.

And please, dont pirate it.

Pretty much agree with the list, except maybe white shadows, and haven't give Swallowed in the sea enough listen yet, but Fix You is brilliant, especially when the guitar part is playing later on.
